Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement, qualifi\u00e9 de \u00ab\u00a0potentiellement violent\u00a0\u00bb selon le <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meteo.gc.ca\/hurricane\/statements_f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bulletin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> d\u2019Environnement et changement climatique Canada publi\u00e9 jeudi matin, produira des vents de force ouragan (d\u00e9passant les 120 km\/h), de la pluie torrentielle et des vagues de plus de 10 m\u00e8tres, pouvant causer d\u2019importantes inondations, ondes de temp\u00eates, dommages structurels et pannes d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Le syst\u00e8me s\u2019approchera des c\u00f4tes de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse dans la nuit de vendredi \u00e0 samedi, puis traversera le golfe du St-Laurent durant toute la journ\u00e9e de samedi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les ouragans frappent les c\u00f4tes de l\u2019est du Canada \u00e0 tous les 5 ans en moyenne. Ils ne sont donc pas exactement rares, mais nous avons toutefois pens\u00e9 opportun d\u2019en glisser quelques mots dans notre blogue, afin de sensibiliser nos lecteurs \u00e0 un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne qui risque de se produire plus fr\u00e9quemment dans les ann\u00e9es et d\u00e9cennies \u00e0 venir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-241\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solutions-mesonet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/G16_sector_eus_GEOCOLOR_60fr_20220922-1252.gif\" alt=\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019un ouragan, au juste ?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un ouragan est une gargantuesque machine thermique, un ogre qui se nourrit avec un app\u00e9tit sans bornes de la chaleur des oc\u00e9ans. En fait, puisque les oc\u00e9ans contiennent une quantit\u00e9 de chaleur immense, c\u2019est le seul endroit o\u00f9 ils peuvent se former, se dissipant rapidement d\u00e8s qu\u2019ils entrent sur la terre ferme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ainsi, un ouragan est un tr\u00e8s grand \u00ab\u00a0tourbillon\u00a0\u00bb d\u2019air de plusieurs centaines de km de diam\u00e8tre dans lequel reste confin\u00e9e une \u00e9norme quantit\u00e9 de chaleur. Cette chaleur est importante car elle entretient en retour la rotation de l\u2019air en causant une chute de pression au c\u0153ur de l\u2019ouragan. Or, le seul endroit contenant suffisamment de chaleur pour satisfaire l\u2019app\u00e9tit d\u2019un ouragan est un oc\u00e9an dont la surface est \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature de 26-28\u00b0C ou plus. Il s&#8217;agit de temp\u00e9ratures si chaudes que les eaux de surface s&#8217;\u00e9vaporent dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de mani\u00e8re exponentielle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&#8217;\u00e9vaporation est importante ici : tout comme la surface de notre peau se refroidit \u00e0 la sortie d\u2019une bonne baignade, la surface de l&#8217;oc\u00e9an se refroidit \u00e0 cause de la chaleur qu&#8217;elle donne aux mol\u00e9cules pour leur permettre de s&#8217;\u00e9chapper vers l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenant, toute cette vapeur va ensuite monter dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re et\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">se recondenser en gouttelettes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lorsqu\u2019elles atteignent les nuages de l\u2019ouragan. Cette condensation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rel\u00e2che la chaleur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> que l&#8217;eau \u00e9vapor\u00e9e avait emport\u00e9e avec elle, alimentant l&#8217;ouragan de cette \u00e9nergie dont il a tant besoin. Mais pour satisfaire celui-ci, il faut <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beaucoup<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de chaleur, donc beaucoup de vapeur d\u2019eau, donc beaucoup d\u2019eaux de surface tr\u00e8s chaudes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Si on r\u00e9sume :<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&#8217;ouragan est un syst\u00e8me d\u2019air en rotation de plusieurs centaines de km de diam\u00e8tre qui arrache par \u00e9vaporation la chaleur des oc\u00e9ans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La chaleur accumul\u00e9e dans l&#8217;air cause une baisse de pression au centre de l\u2019ouragan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La baisse de pression acc\u00e9l\u00e8re la force des vents et la rotation du syst\u00e8me<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les vents renforc\u00e9s alimentent encore plus l\u2019\u00e9vaporation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La rotation renforc\u00e9e confine davantage de chaleur<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La pression baisse davantage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026et ainsi de suite.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019ouragan Fiona<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les toutes derni\u00e8res simulations de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re (par le mod\u00e8le canadien de pr\u00e9vision num\u00e9rique) indiquent que Fiona se dirige tout droit vers l\u2019est de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et le Cap-Breton. L\u2019illustration \u00e0 droite nous montre l\u2019\u00e9volution dans le temps de la vitesse des vents de Fiona depuis t\u00f4t vendredi matin jusqu\u2019\u00e0 t\u00f4t dimanche matin. L\u2019\u0153il de la temp\u00eate devrait toucher terre \u00e0 la hauteur du comt\u00e9 de Guysborough vers 5h samedi matin, avec des vents de force ouragan de cat\u00e9gorie 1 de 120-130 km\/h, et des endroits isol\u00e9s approchant le seuil de cat\u00e9gorie 2 de 155 km\/h.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-242 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.solutions-mesonet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/wind.gif\" alt=\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 512px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 512\/384;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comme nous l&#8217;avons vu dans la section pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, un ouragan se nourrit de quantit\u00e9 prodigieuses d\u2019humidit\u00e9, les accumulations totales de pluie associ\u00e9es \u00e0 la temp\u00eate seront consid\u00e9rables\u00a0: 100 mm et plus dans le centre et l\u2019est de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et la pointe sud-ouest de Terre-Neuve avec des r\u00e9gions de 150 mm et plus, approchant peut-\u00eatre 200 mm.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-244 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.solutions-mesonet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/rain.gif\" alt=\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 512px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 512\/384;\" \/><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La figure de droite nous montre la probabilit\u00e9 que les vents atteignent force ouragan (120 km\/h), selon le Centre national des ouragans am\u00e9ricain (Hurricane National Center \u2013 NHC), \u00e0 n\u2019importe quel moment d\u2019ici la fin de la temp\u00eate. Les endroits les plus touch\u00e9s seront vraisemblablement l\u2019extr\u00eame est de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse (et possiblement l\u2019\u00cele de Sable). Notez qu\u2019il y a une probabilit\u00e9 non-n\u00e9gligeable de 30-40% que des vents d\u2019ouragan frappent les \u00celes-de-la-Madeleine.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-245 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.solutions-mesonet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Hurricane_speeds_probs-300x247.png\" alt=\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/247;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finalement, toujours selon le NHC, les vents de force \u00ab\u00a0temp\u00eate tropicale\u00a0\u00bb (vents de plus de 60 km\/h) atteindront la c\u00f4te dans la soir\u00e9e de vendredi, puis Terre-Neuve et le golfe du St-Laurent dans la nuit de samedi.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-246 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.solutions-mesonet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/144621_earliest_reasonable_toa_no_wsp_34-300x246.png\" alt=\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/246;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u2019est quoi au juste, une \u00ab\u00a0probabilit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb en m\u00e9t\u00e9o ?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le terme \u00ab\u00a0probabilit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9voqu\u00e9 dans la section pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente m\u00e9rite qu\u2019on s\u2019y attarde un peu. Depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es maintenant, dans les grands centres de pr\u00e9vision \u00e0 travers le monde, les simulations num\u00e9riques de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re sont lanc\u00e9es <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plusieurs dizaines de fois de suite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> avec de l\u00e9g\u00e8res diff\u00e9rences dans les donn\u00e9es de d\u00e9part (on nomme ces simulations un \u00ab\u00a0ensemble\u00a0\u00bb). Ceci est dans le but pr\u00e9cis de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tester la robustesse de la pr\u00e9vision<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ainsi, dans le cas o\u00f9 beaucoup de simulations pr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s le m\u00eame sc\u00e9nario, nous pouvons avoir une <\/span><b>bonne confiance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> que ce sc\u00e9nario se produira effectivement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un exemple\u00a0: lorsqu\u2019on dit qu\u2019il y a une probabilit\u00e9 de 70% qu\u2019il y ait plus de 30 mm de pluie \u00e0 un endroit \u00ab\u00a0X\u00a0\u00bb, cela signifie que dans 70% des simulations ex\u00e9cut\u00e9es, la temp\u00eate a produit cette quantit\u00e9 de pluie, et que dans les 30% restants, la temp\u00eate en a produit moins (\u00e0 cause, par exemple, d\u2019une trajectoire l\u00e9g\u00e8rement diff\u00e9rente). Nous dirions alors que nous avons<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un<\/span> <b>bon degr\u00e9 de confiance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dans le sc\u00e9nario de 70%, et un <\/span><b>faible degr\u00e9 de confiance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pour le sc\u00e9nario de 30%, tout en se rappelant que ce dernier <\/span><b>n&#8217;est pas impossible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, seulement moins probable.
